English oak with some stunning features I haven’t seen in any other piece I’ve made so my overall approach was to try and leave this as natural as possible to really show off how beautiful it is..
There are some lovely cracks and knots in this oak, some with bark growing inside of them which I have preserved and filled with a clear resin so the table is practical but you don’t lose any of the character.
The grain is incredible with loads of different colouring from almost blonde to the earthiest brown with strong lines throughout.
It also has stunning medullary rays crossing the grain and showing up beautifully.
The waney edges had some lovely earthy bark on which I have been able to keep sections of on both sides and at the top of the table, smoothing them out so there are no sharp edges and blending the bark into the wood edges.
Finished with an organic matt wax/oil which means it is hard-wearing but also food safe and allows the natural beauty of the wood with all it’s character to shine.
Paired with clear coated steel hairpin legs to give it a minimal and contemporary look.
